One of the best remedies I have found for sport-related type back pain (or any muscle strain or bruising) is Arnica Montana, a homeopathic remedy that comes in tablet and cream form. This remedy is available at health food stores, many drug stores and from on-line health stores. Just follow directions on Arnica vial and I would recommend you use the 30X or 30C strength. Use only until symptoms subside. I'd combine both the cream and the tablets. Tiger Balm is also helpful as a natural heat-inducing type rub. Emu oil is also fantastic for muscle pain. Herbs that help muscle inflammation include ginger and the Ayurvedic remedy Boswellia. Take one to two grams of powdered ginger a day or follow dosage directions on the Boswellia capsules.

Backaches are like headaches - lots of different causes and lots of different approaches to easing them. It's also important to rule out any medical causes for the problem. From a nutritional stand point, avoid meat & animal proteins until your back feels better - because meats contain uric acid that puts extra strain on your kidneys, which in turn can cause extra back pain.
Herbs helpful for back health include alfalfa, boswellia, burdock, oat straw, slippery elm and white willow bark. Follow recommended doses on container.
As soon as you feel back pain or sciatica pain starting up, drink two 8 ounce glasses of water IMMEDIATELY. These types of pain are often connected to dehydration.
Don't break out the Jack Daniels to ease your back pain, but head instead to the closest water fountain. If you are suffering from backache pain, it is VERY important to drink LOTS of water. This helps prevent dehydration that can contribute to muscle aches. By drinking eight 8-ounces of water daily, you'll also flush out acidic wastes that can build up in the tissues & muscles - another contributor to back pain. Make sure to down at least 2 glasses when you feel the ache building up in your back.
Supplement-wise, DL-Phenylalanine can help ease pain but DO NOT take this if you are pregnant, nursing, or suffer from diabetes, panic attacks, high blood pressure or PKU. The recommended dosage is to follow dose directions on the container, but do one week on and one week off. Also, Bromelain and pancreatin are enzymes that help ease inflammation, and again follow directions on container.
I have overcome a painful back problem also by doing some yoga stretches before bed. I got a video tape by Dixie Carter - Yoga For You - Unworkout II) and I picked out the (down-on-the-floor-stretches) that did not cause my neck or back discomfort. I have NOT missed a day doing yoga for over 5 years and I have been amazed at how 5 or 10 minutes a day devoted to yoga has strengthened my back, plus relieve the daily build-up of stress I accumulate.
