April 27, 2007, Newsletter Issue #196: Should I Douche?

Tip of the Week

Vaginal odor is a big concern for many women. In fact, 3 out of 10 women in the U.S. douche regularly. But, keep in mind this can be dangerous because douching products contain chemicals that can irritate your vagina and urethra. Douches also kill the bodyīs natural bacteria, which makes you more susceptible to vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis (BV), yeast infection, and to the STD chlamydia. Douching may also increase womenīs risk of ectopic pregnancy and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), a condition which, if left untreated, can lead to infertility.
