September 15, 2006, Newsletter Issue #166: Beta-1, 3-D-glucan & Cancer

Tip of the Week

Beta-1,3-D-glucan is a polysaccharide extracted from the cell wall of bakerīs yeast that has been shown to trigger a powerful immune-system response. It has specific receptor sites that match up exactly on the macrophage, which are the immune systemīs first line of defense that devours antigens, foreign invaders, and cellular debris. It also effectively scavenges free radicals, unstable molecules that destroy healthy cells. When combined with conventional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation, this simple carbohydrate molecule appears to promote their effectiveness and protect against their adverse side effects.
