June 8, 2001, Newsletter Issue #41: Kids & E. Coli: A Deadly Danger

Tip of the Week

Dangerous E.coli can develop in pools when chlorine levels become low, generally from the presence of too many people in the pool using up chlorine when sweat and other substances go into the water. If a child has fecal residue or has a bowel movement while in the water, the stool would use up additional chlorine.

The signs up on pool walls, requiring a shower before jumping into the water, are an important safety step that most us of regard as an annoyance, but in fact, are VERY important in rinsing off possible contaminants.

Also, one visual test you can employ is to make sure pool water is crystal clear before allowing your kids to swim. Foggy water is an indication the chlorine is interacting with other chemicals and NOT killing germs. AND don`t be shy about asking pool attendants to check the safety level of the water. The occurrence of E.coli contamination in pools may be rare, but this is an area you don`t want to gamble with your child`s health.
