April 9, 2004, Newsletter Issue #131: Bring Your Body into Balance with Bodywork

Tip of the Week

Here`s a mini-guide to some of the bodywork modalities that are available:

Swedish Massage: A traditional form of massage that utilizes long strokes to induce deep relaxing alpha states.

Deep Tissue Massage: More intense bodywork designed to access old injuries and spasms, waking the body up to release and heal these sore spots.

Passive Joint Movement: Poularized by Trager, this method helps open joints up to create more freedom of movement.

Rolfing: An intense method to restore proper structure to the body by stretching muscle and connective tissue and breaking old lesions. It hurts so good.

Feldenkrais: A re-education sytem for the body to restore the body`s natural movement functionality. It`s very gentle and yet can be profoundly effective.

Alexander Technique: Another more subtle modality to re-educate the body to a more natural functional state.

Bodywork can be a great alternative to pain pills or other drastic measures. If you are not sure what to try, contact your local massage school for advice. You can have a happier relationship with your body!
