April 2, 2004, Newsletter Issue #130: What does Certified Organic mean?

Tip of the Week

What makes “Certified Organic” so beneficial? In a world of environmental and health problems, we need to do whatever we can to ensure our health and welfare. Many of us are leaning towards organic groceries, supplements and home products in our efforts to maximize our health and avoid the barrage of toxins we consume on a daily basis. Certified Organic products have undergone the scrutiny of the USDA, the NOP, and the Federal Organic Foods Production Act. No easy feat!

Here`s the benefits we get to enjoy from their efforts:

Certified Organic Agricultural product that is free from:

Antibiotics
Herbicides
Pesticides
Growth hormones
Synthetic trace elements
Sulfites, nitrates, nitrites
Soil, grazing pastures and production facilities free from use of synthetic chemicals.
Packaging free from synthetic fungicides, preservatives, fumigants.
Water that meets the Safe Drinking Water Act.

What else do you need to know? Be careful. Some products out there say "organic" but are not certified organic, which means you don`t know what you`re getting.
