January 16, 2004, Newsletter Issue #121: Keeping Those New Year`s Health Resolutions

Tip of the Week

1. Be Realistic- Losing 30 pounds in 30 days is neither healthy, easy, or sustainable. Most people that lose weight quickly, gain it back.

2. Don`t Ask Too Much of Yourself- Let`s see, this year I`ll quit smoking, quit eating sugar and run 5 miles a day. Yeah, right. Try one resolution at a time. Give it 4 months to become an ingrained habit, then add another resolution.

3. One Day at a Time- We often get discouraged if we don`t get immediate results. Americans are notoriously quick-fix, immediate gratification oriented. Create a reasonable plan and stick to it, day by day. Trust the process.

4. Get Support- Find a friend who will encourage you and give you empathy. Don`t look to people who will try to induce guilt, or talk you down when you fall short.

5. Keep Trying- If you fall from your plan, get right back on it. Don`t wait until tomorrow.

Hope this helps!
