October 3, 2003, Newsletter Issue #116: Protein Digestion- Vital to Long Term Health

Tip of the Week

Take Care in Combining Foods.

Try to eat protein separately from starchy and acid foods. If you must eat them at the same meal, eat the protein first. Eat fruit alone whenever possible; exceptions are bananas and papayas. Eat proteins with leafy green vegetables and fats. Unfortunately, the "meat and potatoes" diet many of us love is a sure way to have digestive trouble as we grow older.

Supplement with Digestive Enzymes.

As we grow older, our bodies produce less digestive enzymes. Taking the appropriate plant enzyme can help to get the digestive process going while the food remains in the stomach, ensuring more digestive action and reducing the burden on the pancreas.

Utilize “Pre-digested” Protein Supplements.

The effects of aging and our fast-paced lifestyles can take their toll on our digestive funstion. There are several supplements on the market offering protein that has already been partially broken down through a fermentation process. These include white fish and whey products, some of which have enzymes added for even better digestion.
