March 30, 2001, Newsletter Issue #31: The Curing Power of Chili Peppers!

Tip of the Week

According to "The Food Pharmacy," a book by health columnist Jane Brody, you can incorporate this impressive natural health-helper into your life in a number of easy ways - like drinking a glass of tomato juice or water daily that has been spiked with 10 to 20 drops of Tabasco, or eating some chili peppers with your meals three times a week.

Before you say, "You got to be kidding!" be aware that these steps can dramatically thin mucus in the lungs and throat and can actually help prevent and treat chronic bronchitis. Just two teaspoons of jalapeno peppers can fire up your body`s blood-clot-dissolving mechanism to help protect you against heart disease and stroke, while dried red peppers can help lower cholesterol and triglycerides.

Also, although chili peppers CAUSE pain and burning in your mouth, they contain something called CAPSAICIN, which induces a reduction in a neurotransmitter called substance P. This is vitally important to those suffering from pain, because if the amount of substance P is reduced in the body, fewer pain sensations are relayed to the central nervous system. As crazy as it sounds, the capsaicin effect can help the irritation associated with conjunctivitis, dental pain caused by dental pulp nerve activity and also arthritis pain. Even crazier...you can experience a "high" of sorts from eating chili peppers. This "heated high" can result when the burning sensation on the tongue "excites" the brain - resulting in the brain secreting endorphins - a natural morphine that blocks pain sensations and induces a certain sense of euphoria.

Experts say it`s best to start introducing pepper products into your diet slowly and to be aware that you can counteract the burning sensation with dairy products like yogurt, whole milk, ice cream or even beer. The hot pepper chemicals dissolve in alcohol and also in the fat content of dairy; important facts to remember if you feel like you`re about to imitate a fire-breathing dragon.

So, if chili peppers are something you already enjoy or think you can learn to appreciate, you`ve got one more potent non-prescription remedy ready and waiting to take on lung congestion from colds, bronchitis, emphysema, arthritis pain, as well as offer extra protection against blood clots and stroke.

Now is that a ~HOT~ tip or what?
