January 23, 2004, Newsletter Issue #122: How to Breathe Naturally

Tip of the Week

Many people breath by expanding their intercostal muscles(the muscles between the ribs). This kind of breathing actually limits the breath. While the intercostal muscles support the breath, the main breathing muscle is the diaphram located BELOW the lungs in the center of your abdomen.

Just watch a baby breathe. He/She will use the diaphram naturally and get a wonderfully compelete breath. Watch her/his belly rise with each breath- effortlessly.

Practice using the diaphram to breathe and RELAX your chest, then you will find you get more air into your lungs. Try lying on your back in a comfortable position. Now put your right hand on your belly and your left on your chest. Focus on making your right hand rise on the inhale followed by your left hand. Become aware of the diaphram muscle as you breathe. Now, when you find yourself breathing into your chest, you can stop and focus on using the diaphram to draw air in.

It may seem like work, but your body will remember. We`re all born with the innate knowledge for a free and easy complete breath.
