October 17, 2003, Newsletter Issue #118: Choosing the Right Medical Doctor

Tip of the Week

1. Interview your physician before you begin treatment. Take a supportive friend along if you feel nervous about it.
2. Talk to a doctor as you would any other person. Doctors are just people like us. Pay attention and watch if he/she has listened and check if she/he has heard what you say. This is a primary way to find out if the doctor treats "body parts" or "whole people".
3. Ask the doctor directly if he/she requires that you follow their course of treatment. Our health choices are ours to make, unless of course you want someone else to be responsible for your health. A doctor that understands that your health choices are yours is more likely to respect you, listen to you, and truly care about you.
