April 5, 2002, Newsletter Issue #84: Wrinkly Smokers?

Tip of the Week

A recent study done in Germany found that smoking activates matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1,) an enzyme that destroys collagen. This is crucial info for those folks who value their skin appearance because collagen is the protein that gives skin its elasticity and 70 percent of its weight. Tests revealed a MUCH higher content of MMP-1 in smokers` skin than nonsmokers.

Nasty wrinkles around the mouth also result from the continual pursing of the lips to suck smoke from a cigarette, plus the smoke triggers oxidation of the cells and shuts down blood flow to the skin.

Obviously, the best solution to safeguarding your outer appearance from smoke damage is to QUIT smoking...but what about the damage you`ve done INSIDE?
