September 7, 2001, Newsletter Issue #54: A Little Something About Aromatherapy

Tip of the Week

First, it`s important to pay heed to guidelines published in *The Complete Family Guide To Alternative Medicine,* which says since essential oils are highly concentrated, they may cause irritation when applied to the skin directly - so test for sensitivity. It is also recommended that essential oils be mixed with carrier oils, like almond, soybean, grapeseed, avocado, or wheatgerm oil, when applying to the skin.

It is also VERY important to note that you should NEVER ingest essential oils except when directed by a skilled medical practioner well-versed in using essential oils. Pregnant women should AVOID aromatherapy completely during the first trimester and women experiencing any complications at all should AVOID aromatherapy all together. Pregnant women past the first trimester should only use aromatherapy under the guidance of a qualified aromatherapist.

Here`s just a few common ailments aromatherapy can help you with:

*Athlete`s foot: Mix 2 drops of lavender oil and 1 drop tea tree oil. Use a cotton swab and apply between toes. Then dilute 5 drops tea tree oil, 1 drop lemon oil in 1 teaspoon vegetable oil and massage entire foot. Wash hands well after application.

*Depression: Add 15 drops geranium oil, 10 drops of bergamot & 5 drops lavender to a warm bath. Relax for at least 10 minutes, while breathing in the aroma of the oils.

*Fear of flying: Place 1 drop of lavender oil & 1 drop geranium oil in a plastic sandwich bag - keep bag in purse or pocket and when anxiousness strikes, inhale scent from the bag.
