Tip of the Week

According to Jean Carper`s *The Food Pharmacy*, eating sugar and other carbohydrates forces up insulin in the blood, triggering a greater ratio of a chemical called tryptophan. This tryptophan then rushes to the brain and produces serotonin, a neurotransmitter known as the calming chemical. The greater amount of tryptophan in the brain, the larger amount of serotonin that can be produced.

Does this mean we all need to rush out and down sugar in huge amounts? Absolutely NOT! The average person needs about 30 grams of pure carbohydrate, which breaks down to about two and a half tablespoons of sugar or about two ounces of candy. Sugar acts as almost like an antidepressant drug in some people and experts have found that people with less sugar-induced serotonin in the brain tend to be depressed and even commit suicide. So, try adding a little sugar to your diet and see how it works for you! This is NOT recommended for people with diabetes.

Another helping hand for depression comes from in the form of a banana...and not just from watching someone slip and fall on a peel!
